What to check in each part of the setup

Each item below suits a particular pet and setup. Read the notes before you buy.

Cages with continuous floor space

Look for a long, flat floor with no ramps or multi-level bars that cut usable room. Hamsters and guinea pigs need space to move, so measure the inside floor, not the outside box. Solid bottoms help keep bedding in place.

Paper-based bedding

Paper or aspen-style bedding is often easier for beginners to keep clean and dust-light. Skip scented or dyed products, since they can irritate small respiratory systems. Match the bedding to the pet before you compare prices.

Wheels and chews sized to the pet

Choose a solid-surface run wheel sized for your pet. Look for no gaps where a foot or tail can catch. Chew toys should be made of safe, non-toxic wood or hay-based materials, and checked for splinters.

Buying for children

Simple care is easier to keep up

A small pet works best when the routine is easy to repeat. A removable tray, a few spare liners, and a basic scoop make daily cleaning quicker.

Choose gentle, durable handling tools for kids and supervise every hold. Pick chews and toys that cannot be pulled apart into small pieces. Compare the cost of replacement parts before you buy.

Before you buy

Measure the floor space. Check the bedding ingredients. Confirm the wheel is solid and sized for your pet. Ask whether replacement parts are easy to find.
